Description
A generous bouquet stands in a tall glass vase, set against a background of reds and magentas. Pink and white roses, bright orange-red carnations, a deep pink anemone with a dark heart and sprays of small white flowers spill out above the dark green leaves, while the stems stay visible through the clear water.
Behind the flowers, the background is built from flat bands and blocks of colour, from coral to fuchsia and crimson, which give the still life an almost graphic structure. The knife work brings relief to the petals and contrasts with the smooth planes around them. Rouge Magenta pushes a single family of colours to its brightest, the flowers seeming to grow out of the warmth of the background itself.
