Totem is part of the new geometric series developed by Sophie Dumont, where streamlined forms become the support for a free and sensitive reading. Without ever imposing a subject, the composition evokes the silent presence of a vertical figure, in the manner of a contemporary totem, between architecture, memory, and human presence.
The colored flat areas, the curves, and the vertical lines are organized in a subtle balance where each element dialogues with the others. The deep reds, ochres, grayish blues, and dull greens bring warmth and depth, while the numerous superimpositions of material create a vibrant surface that reveals the light through variations in lighting.
True to her approach, Sophie Dumont seeks to suggest rather than to describe. Each gaze can discover a different interpretation: a silhouette, an architecture, a symbol, or simply a play of plastic balances. This assumed ambiguity leaves the viewer the freedom to construct their own reading of the work.
Realized in oil on linen canvas in 2026, Totem is offered framed with a black American box, which emphasizes the graphic strength of the composition while reinforcing its contemporary character.
