In this work, the artist constructs an abstract landscape around a vast expanse of ivory whites and chalky shades. Two horizontal bands, composed of blue-gray, brown, ochre, and deep black, structure the canvas and suggest the successive limits of a territory. A fine red trace appears in places below the upper line, bringing a subtle tension to this deliberately sober palette.
The landscape is not here a faithful representation of a specific place. Sophie Dumont retains the essential elements: a line, a distance, a light, and a few fragments of earth. The composition thus oscillates between evocation of a Nordic landscape, a memory of an observed territory, and almost minimal abstraction.
The surface is worked by successive layers of oil paint, superimpositions, scrapes, and partial erasures. These interventions reveal irregularities, traces, and variations of material that give depth to the large light areas. The whites do not constitute an empty space: they retain the memory of previous layers and become a true pictorial material.
Installed in Normandy, Sophie Dumont develops a painting in which the landscape is progressively stripped of its descriptive elements. Her work explores the relationship between matter, memory, and perception. The horizon lines, strata, and chromatic contrasts allow her to create spaces that seem both real and interior.
Latitude blanche is distinguished by its balance between stripping down and density. The restraint of the palette reinforces the presence of the few colored accents and gives the work a luminous, open, and contemplative atmosphere.
