This abstract composition unfolds a succession of colored planes, strata, and horizon lines evoking territories traversed by time, erosion, and light. Muted blues, ochre earths, muted greens, and ivory passages seem to emerge slowly from the surface, like fragments of landscapes held within matter.
The work rests on a subtle balance between construction and erasure. The successive layers, the rubbings and the visible reworkings create an atmospheric depth that gives the canvas a meditative and silent presence.
Sophie Dumont works exclusively in oil, layering numerous coats to create vibrant paintings imbued with memory. In The Silent Lands, this approach reaches a high level of maturity: nothing is demonstrative, everything rests on restraint, subtle tensions, and the interplay of light.
The painting thus oscillates between abstraction and reminiscence of the Norman landscape, without ever seeking direct description. Certain colored masses recall fields, cliffs, or sea horizons, but these references remain deliberately open in order to allow for a contemplative experience.
Sophie Dumont, a contemporary French painter born in Paris in 1964, lives and works in Normandy. Her work has been exhibited in France and internationally and is included in several private and museum collections.
