A broad burgundy curve crosses the canvas and determines the main movement. Around it, verticals, circles, and interwoven shapes are organized, in a palette associating burnt orange, deep green, red, powdered pink, grayish blue, ochres, and broken whites. Each element retains its autonomy while participating in the overall balance of the composition.
The title refers to the musical counterpoint, that secondary melodic line which accompanies a main melody without being confused with it. This notion of dialogue finds its pictorial equivalent here: the forms respond to each other, sometimes oppose each other, then find their place in a constructed but never fixed ensemble.
Realized in oil on linen canvas by successive layers, the work deliberately retains traces of its elaboration. Superimpositions, rubs, transparencies, reprises, and surface irregularities soften the geometric rigor and give the painting depth and material presence.
With Contrechant, Sophie Dumont continues her research around a geometric and architectural abstraction in which the structure never erases the gesture. The forms can evoke fragments of architecture, figures, or instruments, without ever imposing a single reading.
