In Rémanescence, Sophie Dumont offers a poetic evocation of the coastline, on the border between abstraction and landscape. Broad horizontal layers of pearly grey, off-whites, nuanced blues and deep blacks overlap in a refined composition where light seems to emerge from the matter itself.
The title refers to the persistence of a sensation or image after its disappearance. Like a memory of the sea, a glimpsed horizon, or a fleeting light, the work preserves the trace of a landscape without ever literally describing it. The textures achieved through numerous layers of oil, scraping, and successive reworkings lend the surface a silent and meditative presence.
Through its subtle balance of matter, light, and space, Rémanescence invites contemplation and leaves the viewer with considerable freedom of interpretation. This work is part of Sophie Dumont’s ongoing exploration of the memory of landscapes and the emotional expression of nature.
