Description
Beyond the lands explores the landscape as a territory of memory, at the border between figuration and abstraction.
In this work, Sophie Dumont does not seek to represent an identifiable place. The landscape is constructed by successive strata, horizon lines, and colored fragments that can evoke fields, reliefs, or expanses of water. The dull blues dialogue with the ochres, the light earths, the greens, and the coral tones, creating a depth that gradually draws the gaze toward the distance.
Material occupies an essential place in the composition. Worked in oil by successive layers, the surface reveals scrapes, erasures, superimpositions, and reprises. Some layers disappear partially to allow others to surface, giving the painting an almost geological dimension and making time a constituent element of the work.
The lines fragment, the planes move, and recognizable forms gradually dissolve into the material. The landscape then becomes less a space to identify than a sensation: that of a territory traversed, transformed, and recomposed by memory.
With Beyond the lands, Sophie Dumont continues her research around the abstract landscape, where light, matter, and depth allow to go beyond representation to open a more interior space.
