Description
In Ecru, Sophie Dumont presents a minimalist library, reduced to its essential structure. The books, treated as vertical masses, lose all descriptive function to become fragments of rhythm and texture. The limited palette of off-whites, grays, and sandy tones creates a silent, almost meditative atmosphere.
The composition is organized into clearly defined horizontal registers, while denser verticals introduce a subtle tension into the whole. The material, worked with a palette knife, retains visible asperities, revealing layers and areas of deliberate erasure. This controlled instability prevents any illustrative interpretation and situates the work within a broader reflection on memory, time, and thought.
Neither strictly figurative nor totally abstract, it lies in a deliberate middle ground, where the library becomes an inner landscape, a space of restraint and silence.
This painting dates from 2023 and was reworked in 2025.
