Description
In Mémoire Obscure, Sophie Dumont develops a painting of restraint and depth, constructed through successive layers of matter. The work is part of her research around abstract libraries, considered not as figurative objects, but as mental architectures, imbued with time and memory.
The composition rests on a subtle balance between horizontal and vertical layers, evoking silent, almost buried rows. Dark tones—deep grays, muted blues, nuanced blacks—structure the space while allowing the characteristic reddish-ochre background of the artist’s work to surface in places. These underlying traces bring warmth and vibrancy to a deliberately restrained palette.
The surface, marked by erasures and reworkings, testifies to a slow process, where the painting is built up over time. Mémoire Obscure invites prolonged contemplation, without imposed narrative, leaving the viewer the freedom to inhabit the pictorial space.
This large-format work reflects the maturity of Sophie Dumont’s work, between formal rigor, material sensitivity and introspective depth.
