Description
In this powerful abstract composition, the artist decomposes the landscape into overlapping and fracturing horizontal layers, evoking the geological strata of a moving earth. The eye progresses from bottom to top, passing through masses of deep blue-grey, warm ochres, a broad band of burnt sienna red, then khaki greens, before being lost in a pearly grey sky punctuated by a veil of lavender.
The brushstrokes are direct, generous, sometimes heavy-handed—one can discern the palette knife in the thickness of the paint, which leaves ridges of light on the canvas. This texture gives the work an undeniable physical presence.
The earthy, restrained palette engages in a dialogue with the energy of the flat planes: lichen greens, copper reds, and asphalt blacks clash in a muted tension between stability and instability. A dark fissure runs through the center like a tectonic fault, suggesting the fragility of the ground beneath the surface.
A work that oscillates between lyrical abstraction and mental landscape, in the tradition of European painting attached to matter and territory.
