Exclusive to Belart Gallery.
Townley’s artistic style is a compelling fusion of expressionism and surreal imagery. His paintings are characterized by loose, gestural brushstrokes, vibrant colors, and a distorted or fragmented representation of the human form. He often employs unconventional techniques, such as layering paint, scraping it back, and incorporating found objects, to create a sense of raw emotionality and psychological depth.
This artwork (As the sun sets, I rage by Lincoln Townley) features a faceless figure clad in a dark suit and red tie, set against a vibrant, swirling background of warm yellows and oranges. The face is an abstract patchwork of vivid colors, including blue, pink, and orange, creating a jarring contrast to the formal attire. This juxtaposition between the chaotic and the orderly suggests themes of identity and self-expression. The brushwork in the background evokes a sense of movement and energy, further enhancing the painting’s dynamic quality. Crisp black outlines accentuate the figure, offering a sharp definition against the lively backdrop. The overall composition invites viewers to explore the duality of human nature, capturing the tension between societal expectations and personal identity. This piece challenges traditional portraiture, making it both captivating and thought-provoking.
