Beschrijving
Lincoln Townley’s expressive figurative paintings buzz with intimations of anxiety and violence as well as throughlines of the complications of celebrity. Townley has depicted anonymous screaming visages with gaping mouths; he has also painted celebrities like Michael Caine and Clint Eastwood that situate the movie stars in lysergic tie-dye landscapes or intense neon grids. Townley finds inspiration in the work of artists like Francis Bacon and Edvard Munch. He has exhibited in New York City, London, Los Angeles, Berlin, Singapore, Venice, and Brisbane. He participated in the 2019 Venice Biennale and has collaborated with brands like MasterCard and with organizations including the British Academy of Film.
This artwork features a striking figure with an enigmatic, swirling vortex in place of a face, instantly drawing the viewer’s attention. The use of vivid colors—particularly pinks, yellows, and blues—creates a dynamic contrast that adds depth and energy to the composition. The background is a wash of wavy blue and yellow patterns, suggesting movement and chaos, while the figure itself, dressed in a suit and tie, introduces an element of formality juxtaposed against the abstract background. The daring texture, achieved through bold brushstrokes, adds a tactile dimension, making the surface as intriguing as the imagery itself. This piece uniquely marries abstraction with subtle hints of surrealism, challenging the observer to find meaning within its bold forms and vivid palette.
