Born in Paris in 1964, Sophie Dumont is a contemporary French painter whose works are held in private and museum collections. Her work, exhibited in France and internationally, is distinguished by a constant exploration of light, the memory of places, and the materiality of paint.
In this work, Sophie Dumont presents a minimalist landscape where forms seem to emerge slowly from a succession of superimposed layers. A discreet horizon line structures the space, while broad expanses of bluish-grey, ochre, and beige respond to one another in subtle harmony.
The composition evokes a territory suspended between land and water, between presence and erasure. The colored masses interlock like fragments of memory, suggesting a shore, a sandy expanse, or a landscape observed through the filter of recollection. Without ever precisely describing a place, the artist leaves the viewer free to project their own memories onto it.
Created in oil using a process of successive layers, the work reveals a rich and nuanced texture. The knife marks, transparencies, and scraped areas create a silent depth that animates the entire surface of the canvas.
Both contemporary and timeless, it is part of Sophie Dumont’s research on abstract landscapes, where light and matter become the true subjects of the painting.
