Beschrijving
In The Citadel of Books, Sophie Dumont unfolds a monumental library, structured into six compartments like so many alcoves of knowledge. The work evokes both the architecture of a place of memory and the solemnity of an abstract composition. Each book is treated as an autonomous, almost sculptural form, in a mineral palette of off-white, black, ochre, and slate gray.
The thick brushstrokes, applied with a knife, give the whole a strong material presence. Despite the rigor of the structure, the arrangement of the volumes reveals an inner vibration: that of ideas, of silence, of reading.
The Citadel of Books is part of the artist’s iconic series of stylized libraries. This imposing canvas will naturally find its place in a contemporary interior, a media library, or a workspace, as a symbol of intellect, balance, and living memory.
